Learn how to test an AI tool to safely see where it makes mistakes or invents facts.
Steps
- Open a free AI chat tool like ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) or Claude (claude.ai) in your web browser.
- Start a new chat by clicking the text box at the bottom of the screen.
- Copy the prompt template below and paste it into the chat box.
- Replace the {topic} variable with a subject you know very well, like your hometown or your favorite hobby.
- Press the Enter key on your keyboard to send the message.
- Read the AI's answer carefully. Look for small mistakes, outdated facts, or things it completely made up.
- Reply to the AI by typing: 'Point out any parts of your previous answer that you are not 100% sure about.' Press Enter.
- Use this experience to understand that AI is a helpful assistant, not a perfect expert. Always double-check its facts.
Prompts to Use
Act as a helpful guide. I want to understand the limits of AI. Write a short, 3-paragraph summary about {topic}. In the summary, include one piece of outdated information, one completely made-up fact, and one true fact. At the end of your response, list these three items in a bulleted list so I can see how AI can make mistakes.
