Learn why AI sometimes invents facts and how to check its answers so you never use wrong information.
Steps
- Open your web browser and go to a free AI chat tool like chatgpt.com, claude.ai, or gemini.google.com.
- Create a free account if you do not have one, or log in to your existing account.
- Copy the prompt template below and paste it into the chat box at the bottom of the screen.
- Change the word {topic} in the prompt to something you know a lot about, like your job, a hobby, or a famous person.
- Press the send button and read the AI's answer carefully. Try to spot the made-up fact yourself.
- Notice how confident the AI sounds, even when it is wrong. This is called an 'hallucination'.
- Always remember this lesson: before you use AI facts for important work, check them using a normal search engine like Google.
Prompts to Use
Act as a helpful teacher. I want to understand how AI makes mistakes. Please write a short explanation about {topic}. In your explanation, include at least one completely made-up fact that sounds very real. At the very end of your response, add a note in brackets saying [Hallucination included above]. Then, explain in simple words why AI sometimes creates these fake facts.
